What size curtain pole do I need?
Your curtain pole should extend 15–20 cm beyond the window frame on each side. This allows the curtains to stack clear of the glass when open, maximising light. For a standard window, add 30–40 cm to the width of your window recess to get your pole length.
For example, if your window is 120 cm wide, you'll want a pole between 150 cm and 200 cm long.
What diameter curtain pole should I choose?
Curtain pole diameter affects both the look and the load capacity of the pole:
- 19 mm — Lightweight curtains, smaller windows, and decorative use. Ideal for voiles and sheers.
- 25 mm — The most popular size. Suits medium-weight curtains and most standard windows.
- 28 mm — Heavier curtains and wider spans. A good choice for living rooms and bay windows.
- 35 mm — Heavy interlined or blackout curtains, large windows, and statement interiors.
As a rule of thumb: the heavier your curtains and the wider your window, the larger the diameter you need.
What material curtain pole is best?
The right material depends on your interior style and practical needs:
- Metal (steel or Wrought iron) — Durable, strong, and available in a wide range of finishes including brushed nickel, antique brass, and matt black. Best for heavier curtains and contemporary or traditional interiors.
- Brass — A premium choice for classic and period interiors. Naturally antimicrobial and long-lasting, but harder to find.
- Chrome — Sleek and modern. Works well in minimalist or Scandi-style rooms.
- Wood — Warm and natural. Suits country, rustic, and traditional interiors. Note that wooden poles have lower weight capacity than metal, but dont worry, 45mm and above can handle heavy curtains..
How do I know if a curtain pole is strong enough for my curtains?
Every curtain pole has a maximum weight capacity, usually expressed in kilograms per metre. To check if a pole is suitable:
- Weigh your curtains (or estimate based on fabric — interlined curtains can weigh 1–2 kg per metre of drop).
- Check the pole's weight rating in the product specification.
- Ensure you have enough brackets — for poles over 180-240 cm, a centre support bracket is usually required.
If in doubt, size up. A 28 mm or 35 mm metal pole will handle most domestic curtain weights comfortably.
How many brackets do I need for a curtain pole?
As a general guide:
- Up to 200cm — 2 end brackets
- 200–400 cm — 2 end brackets + 1 centre bracket
- 400–600 cm — 2 end brackets + 1 centre brackets
- 400–600 cm — 4 end brackets + 1 or more centre brackets end brackets placed side by side to increase the weight capacity when curtains are open.
Always follow the manufacturer's bracket recommendations for the specific pole you choose.
What type of curtain heading works with a curtain pole?
Curtain poles are designed for curtains with eyelet, pencil pleat, or tab top headings. Each heading type threads or hooks onto the pole differently:
