How to Measure curtain poles and curtain tracks for your home

Curtain poles are both functional and decorative and can dramatically enhance the appearance of your window dressing. Before ordering from the wide range of designs you need to know what length pole you need.

If you have an existing curtain pole which you are replacing then measuring the length of this will give you the correct length for your new pole.

If you are using a curtain pole for the first time then follow our measuring guide to be sure you buy the right length curtain pole. If you are measuring for a bay window use the How to Measure: Bay Windows guide instead.

All you need is a tape measure, metal ones are best as fabric or paper ones can stretch over time. Take all measurements to the nearest centimetre. Don’t worry if your measurements are in inches as you can use our conversion table.

Measuring guide

First measure the inside recess width of the window - Measurement A

Next decide how much space you want to allow for curtains to be drawn back either side of the window - Measurement B. This should be at least 15cm ( 6” ) each side i.e. 30cm ( 12” ) in total.

Your required curtain pole length is Meaurement A + Measurement B + Measurement B

Now you are ready to start shopping with Just Poles.

A few things to remember when you find the design of curtain pole you like:

All pole measurements are that of the pole only, on which the curtain rings can travel so always check that there is space for the finial design you have chosen.

If you are unsure of the pole length to choose then choose the longer size as most poles can be cut down to size. If you are still unsure add your chosen pole to your shopping basket and then use the "Make an Enquiry" option, providing as much additional information as possible and one of our team will be happy to advise you.

After you have made your choice of curtain pole or curtain track you may need some guidance when fitting, please check our Installation page for some handy tips.
